From the Desk of the CEO: Continuing to Advance the Profession in 2023

With gratitude for all who help make safety a reality

January 19, 2023

BCSP Certificants, Stakeholders, and Friends:

As we begin a new and exciting year in 2023, we are full of gratitude for the countless talented people continually working alongside us for a united purpose.

From our Board of Directors and staff to our credential holders, Ambassadors, and newly formed Emerging Professionals Committee, we are fortunate to be surrounded by professionals dedicated to safety, health, and environmental (SH&E) practice.

As always, a new year brings about new leadership for our Board. Leslie Stockel, CSP, SMS concluded a formative year as President, and now last year’s Vice President Bruce Lyon, CSP, SMS, P.E., ARM, CHMM steps into the President role.

I would like to formally thank Leslie for her commitment to BCSP’s growth. It has been my pleasure to collaborate with her this past year for the advancement of the profession. We worked on several significant projects together to expand our reach around the world, highlighted by our first Industry Roundtable in Dubai and our inaugural Global Learning Summit (GLS). Those endeavors brought to life the three pillars of our ongoing strategic plan:

  • Expanding our reach and awareness to support the development of a robust and diverse SH&E workforce
  • Delivering high-quality programming and tools to assist current and future credential holders in their knowledge and careers
  • Building partnerships that align with our mission and values to advance safety practice

While Leslie’s term as President has come to an end, we are delighted to have Bruce leading our 2023 Board of Directors. Bruce brings a wealth of insight from a distinguished career in risk management, team-based problem solving, and standards development. He has authored publications and built frameworks to minimize risk and prevent workplace injuries. Bruce is dedicated to continuing our mission to inspire and develop leaders in SH&E practice, and he will faithfully lead the Board through what promises to be another impactful year in 2023.

We are indebted to departing Past President Joaquin Diaz, CSP, OHST, CHST, CIH, QEP and Treasurer Raymond Ferrara, CFP whose wisdom and dedicated service to our Board ran for five and six years, respectively. They leave difficult shoes to fill, but we are pleased to welcome Vice President Ashok Garlapati, CSP, QEP, CFIOSH, FASSP, Treasurer Jay Harf, PhD, CSP, and Public Director Mary Hjorth, SPHR, SHRM-SCP into executive committee roles in 2023. We also welcome and are grateful to have Mike Sutton, CFRE, CFRM join the Board as a Public Director.

While these Board positions change, BCSP’s commitment remains the same. We are devoted to helping you, the safety professional, be your absolute best. More exciting developments are on the horizon this year:

  • We will be releasing a series of informative programming to support professional development and leadership growth.
  • The BCSP Foundation will hold its biennial Research & Innovation Summit in August.
  • We will continue to deliver convenience through our Onsite Exam Delivery and examCORE In-Person options to bring our exams and prep courses to you.

Also, stay tuned as we prepare for the next GLS, to be held in 2024.

On behalf of BCSP, we are determined to lead the way forward and to provide growth opportunities for our credential holders. We thank you for joining us in our mission to make the world a safer place, and we look forward to a wonderful year ahead with you in 2023.

Sincerely,

Christy Uden, CAE, IOM
