2013 Lifetime Achievement Award Recipients

BCSP is proud to announce the 2013 Lifetime Achievement Award recipients

Fred A. Manuele, P.E., CSP is President of Hazards Limited – the company he formed after retiring from Marsh & McLennan where he was a Managing Director and Manager of M&M Protection Consultants. His experience in the practice of safety spans several decades. Mr. Manuele has authored numerous books that have been adopted by safety degree programs. A good number of Mr. Manuele’s papers relating to safety engineering and management have been published, some of which have received professional paper awards. Mr. Manuele was the chair of the committee that developed ANSI/ASSE Z590.3: the American National Standard approved in 2011 for Prevention through Design. He was awarded the honor of Fellow by the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) and was given the Distinguished Service to Safety award by the National Safety Council (NSC). He is a former Board Member of ASSE, NSC, and the Board of Certified Safety Professionals, where he also served as President in 1990.

Pat L. Clemens, P.E., CSP devoted more than 30 years of his career to the SH&E profession. Mr. Clemens held a BEE from Ohio State University and an Engineering Degree from the Université de Louvain in Belgium. He had over 20 years of teaching experience, having taught around 120 short courses on topics in system safety engineering through both ASSE and NASA as well as short courses for several universities. Mr. Clemens published more than 20 technical papers in fields of aeronautical engineering and more than 30 papers in the field of system safety engineering. The International System Safety Society (ISSS) awarded him Fellow membership in 2001 as well as the ISSS Professional Achievement Award and the Educator of the Year Award earlier in his career. In addition to these accomplishments, Mr. Clemens held two patents with a third pending both in the US and internationally. He served on the Board of Certified Safety Professionals’ Board and was President of the Board in 1987. Mr. Clemens passed away in May of 2013 and will truly be missed by the system safety industry and BCSP.
